Eve, The First Lady

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”-Genesis 2:18

Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”-Genesis 2:23-24

Women, we are needed in this world. No matter what marital status you are, you are needed. God made women capable to help, to assist, to work alongside the people we love in our life. We are a part of the fabric of life.

In the Easton’s Bible Commentary, the commentator Matthew Henry says: “This companion was taken from his side to signify that she was to be dear unto him as his own flesh. Not from his head, lest she should rule over him; nor from his feet, lest he should tyrannize over her; but from his side, to denote that species of equality which is to subsist in the marriage state.”

An important thing to know is that God rules over our lives. He is the one who defines and purposes us in this world. We are not second-class citizens to be looked down upon. But, we can’t think we can do everything as God can. There are some roles and positions that God designed a man to do. There are some roles that God designed a woman to do. There are roles where God is designed to plan and execute exclusively.

I know what you are thinking..”Bianca, that’s sexist and patriarchal. Didn’t you say a woman can be anything she wants to be!?!

Yes, a woman can be anything. My point is: As a helper to the people in our lives, God will not call us to be the boss, judge, and jury over humanity, but a helper toward the greater goal or purpose.

Before Eve came along, Adam was alone. He was in Paradise naming animals, living life, and enjoying God. But God knew that he needed someone to navigate life with, someone like him who would be vital to his well-being. I bet you that Adam was going to name an animal something crazy and maybe Eve said, “Honey, what about this name?” Maybe Eve was the reasoning behind rhinoceros (You never know).  I bet you Eve brought a different perspective but was not domineering or micro-managing. She probably knew when to voice her opinion and when to step back.

For me, I like to preach a lot (as you can tell). I like to be the “Female Savior,” “The Fixer,” “The Bossy One.” Growing up, I was the bossy child (oldest of three). The kid in class who wanted to be the “Mom” in playtime because I knew I could boss everyone around. I would give people my advice and help myself into people’s situations. As a result, my “help” would be taken the wrong way and people would be offended and hurt. I had to learn to take a step back. God will give me the ability to help and the words to say, but not every circumstance calls for my full “help.” Sometimes God calls me to listen to a friend, to encourage a friend with scripture or an inspirational quote, to hug and hold the person, to just pray with and for them. Sometimes I am called to help by being silent. Yes, God calls us to be silent sometimes.

In spite of Eve’s faults, she helped in the best way she could according to her Savior. To help means listening to God’s instruction to effectively act and work alongside our families, our employees, our friends, and strangers we encounter. Let us follow that example instead what we feel is best.
